I absolutely hate it when I get hit with the over the limit baggage charges for luggage especially the cheap flights in Asia where the limits are half or less than US Airlines, I came up with some strategies that work well for me as a professional Cheap Charley to keep the baggage charges to a thing of the past.
Keep some stuff in your pockets and wear a fanny pack which seems like a pain but if you keep some stuff in your pockets it is not weighed at all. I keep my camera, iPod and slip my paper back into my pants belt.
Crocs
I also wear my money pouch as a bandolier slung under my arm so that I am not uncomfortable on the flight, and it is less likely to be found should you get mugged. With cash, air tickets, visas, passport and other important paperwork it can add up if it is in your carry on. When buying a money belt look for ones that have plastic zippers with no metal so that you don't have to flash your stash in public. Oh and you really cool people that wear them like fanny belts out in the open a sure way to be a hit with the low lifes.
Today right now I have Philippine Peso, Cambodia Riel. Vietnam Dong, Thai Baht, Malaysian Ringgit, Sing dollars and Indonesian Rupee which I like to have on hand for getting from the airport to the foreign exchange place in town. All together it adds up to 0 USD maybe but it does weigh a bit.
Planes and airports are many times cold so don't pack all the heavier stuff put it on your arm. Put a sweater on and wear your jeans. The secret to staying warm is layers so do you really even need the arctic parka, or can you get by with a poncho and light jacket.
I also really look at my shoes. The hiking boots never make it these days, instead I go for the wide sole trail running shoes which are made to be lightweight, but also offer stability on the mountain treks, to the shared bathrooms in the Perhentian islands for instance. Get the Dr Scholl's odor eaters, the extra padding and stink removal are worth the extra expense, especially if you are humping a heavy rucksack.
I used to debate on should I bring the a pair of over-sized flip flops or Croc's, both are light weight and water proof and in Asia I want to have a covered toes for the occasional unscheduled rock or sidewalk that sticks up to a perfect height to have you cursing like a Barbary Pirate as you do a tumbling run, so the Croc's get the nod today.
Really think about what you are going to need and pack twice, once with what would be nice, and the 2nd time what is realistically going to get you on without getting hit with the overweight charge. On Khao San road in Bangkok heading towards the river by the big Chao Phraya Wat, you can see all the stuff that people thought that they were going to need and then dumped, things like mosquito nets, lightweight tents and cheap snorkel sets are always available. If you are going into Bangkok and think are going to need that stuff stop there and get it for half price and hardly used!
A question I always ask is how much does it weight versus how much does it cost to replace? In Asia in places like Cambodia Vietnam and Bali clothes can be very cheap so why bring so much to begin with. The same is true for personal items like soap, shampoo, conditioner and toothpaste add that all up and it can hit a kilo, at a kilo you can buy most of it for less than that and you don't have to lug it around. Today if you have containers with liquids that are larger than 100 MG they take it away at the security screen. Buy the little travel size which is all you need to get you over there and you can buy a bigger bargain one. If you stay in budget hotels many times they will have little soap bars and the nicer accommodations will have shampoo and conditioner in travel sizes. If you open it they throw it out, so you might as well take it and be eco friendly tourist to boot.
